  • 1 cup chopped dates
  • 1/2 cup nuts

  • 1 cup + 3 tablespoons hot water

  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 1/2 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 cup flour
  • 1 tablespoon cocoa
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup Chocolate Chips

  • 1 teaspoon soda

Instructions
  1. Add soda to dates, and nuts – pour hot water over mixture and let stand while preparing the batter.
  2. Batter
  3. Cream shortening and sugar
  4. Add eggs
  5. Sift flour, salt, and cocoa. Add to mixture
  6. Add vanilla, 1/2 cup chocolate chips and date mixture
  7. Pour into 9-inch x 13-inch greased and floured pan
  8. Sprinkle with other 1/2 cup chocolate chips
  9. Bake 40 minutes in 350 oven
