Ingredients

soda

+ 3 tablespoons hot water
Batter

white sugar

shortening

teaspoon
Salt

teaspoon
vanilla

flour

tablespoon
cocoa

Instructions
Add soda to dates, and nuts – pour hot water over mixture and let stand while preparing the batter.
Batter
Cream shortening and sugar
Add eggs
Sift flour, salt, and cocoa. Add to mixture
Add vanilla, 1/2 cup chocolate chips and date mixture
Pour into 9-inch x 13-inch greased and floured pan
Sprinkle with other 1/2 cup chocolate chips
Bake 40 minutes in 350 oven
